    Manhattan Chapter - January 2018

    Manhattan Chapter – January 2018

It has been an amazing year for TRIO Manhattan and 2018 promises to be spectacular.

Our 23rd ‘Remember & Rejoice’ ecumenical service is coming up at the magnificent St. Patrick's Cathedral on 5th Avenue in New York City on Saturday April 21 at 2:30 PM. The program includes donors and recipient speakers, spiritual leaders, music, singing and a dedication to our donors and their families during a candle lighting and white rose distribution ceremony. This is truly an event to participate in as it is the largest gathering of organ donors and recipients in the country, with approximately 1,500 attendees annually. Our service is translated into Spanish and American Sign Language.

Monthly support meetings are held, generally on the third Tuesday of the month, with expert speakers on various educational topics of interest to members. In 2017 members learned about ‘Improving Outcomes Through Breakthroughs In Organ Preservation’, to ‘Immune Suppression and Increased Risk for Skin Issues’ and ‘Medicare Advantage Plans, Part D and Beyond’ and hosted a lively discussion on ‘Ethics of Transplantation’. This year we look forward to hearing about the VA’s new living donor program, receiving useful information from a transplant pharmacist and other engaging subjects.

Social events for members and their guests occur throughout the year, and include a year-end holiday celebration, a lunch giving thanks to our donors and a picnic.

The board keeps our members informed of the issues and challenges in legislation, organ shortage and ideas to improve the sobering numbers of people still waiting for a lifesaving transplant. We work to influence policy and legislation change, side-by-side along with the OPO, LiveOnNY, surgeons and coordinators at our area transplant centers, and other transplant organizations and advocacy groups that serve our community.

The TRIO - Manhattan Chapter Team partnered with LiveOnNY on October 4 to sign-up more than 3500 New Yorkers to the registry, on Donor Enrollment Day this year. In 2017 we participated in this remarkable day at area hospitals and transplant centers, pharmacies and colleges.

Chapter members continue to be public speakers for the OPO's speaker's bureau, sharing their donor/recipient life stories to spread the message of transplant success and the urgent need for donor registrations.

The Manhattan Chapter contributed $250 towards the national TRIO scholarship program in 2017 and hope to be able to do even more in 2018.
