Heart transplantation is a new lease on life. The first two years are focused on preventing rejection and infection but what about life in the years beyond?
Remaining on immunosuppression is critical as rejection can occur even after many years if these medications are stopped. There are some specific risks of long-term immunosuppression medications that drive the testing we recommend at each annual evaluation. As our patients live longer lives, they are also at risk of the common diseases that anyone can get as they age. This session will focus on how to stay healthy years after transplant as well as the reason we encourage screening tests at each annual evaluation.
