Activity Report

    April 2018

Following up on a successful year in 2017 both activity and finance wise, the chapter continues with the following updates and plans for 2018:

Began the 2018 year in grand style . . .

    - formed a new TRIO Philadelphia chapter board:
    > Elizabeth Rubin, chapter treasurer
    > Sue Kelchner, Vice-president
    > Susan Pincus, official photographer
    > Jim Gleason, president & web master
    > Bob Kelchner
    > Bill Soloway

    - hosting the TRIO national board meeting January 12th & 13th at our Gift of Life Donor Program offices - see Gift of Life CEO & President, Howard Nathan's address to the board at

    - hosting TRIO's 30th Anniversary Awards banquet at the beautiful Smilow Research Center - view the event in the TRIO Transplant Presentation Library at

    - still distributing our 3rd printing of our transplant book for children, Mommy Can Play Again, (<-- click here to view) which continues to be given out free (donations are always welcome) to requests from transplant programs across the country and the local Delaware Valley (NJ/PA/DE) region - books are being distributed to local community libraries and transplant program social workers as a way to introduce TRIO and engage them in our on-going activities/events

    - February's meeting featured another great talk this time by Sander S. Florman, MD is a multi-organ abdominal transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon, Director of the Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute at The Mount Sinai Hospital and The Charles Miller, MD Professor of Surgery at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.  View that presentation at

    - plans are just getting underway to support the TRIO national scholarship program with a yet to be determined fund raising event with a goal this year of $1,000.  This is a sequel to our prior scholarship fundraiser led by kidney recipient, Bob Kelchner who donated a beautiful Lionel train set as the raffle prize that raised over $600 for this great cause helping young students of donro and transplant families.

    - the chapter continues to work in concert with the Gift of Life Donor Program (our local OPO) and other local support groups with such on-going events such as:

... hosting a table at the annual DASH for donor awareness held in April, Donate Life Month's big event here in Philadelphia DASH 2017 table wi Bill Soloway 1

... hosting a monthly support group speaker meeting, recording their presentations for the TRIO national Transplant Presentation Library (over 100 videos, 90% of which have been recorded at our chapter support group meetings here in Philadelphia, are now viewable on YouTube,
go to LIBRARY (<-- click here) to select a title
... hosting a quarterly transplant movie night open to the public and more recently also offered at the local Gift of Life Transplant Family House along with a book reading event on alternate months there for resident families
... chapter members continue to be public speakers for the OPO's speaker's bureau, sharing their donor/recipient life stories to spread the message of transplant success and the urgent need for donor registrations

TRIO Philadelpia is proud of its decades long tradition of supporting the TRIO national organization with its members serving on the national board and in various leadership officer roles, currently:
