About TRIOMission StatementTRIO Launches Nationwide Organ Donor "Thank You!" CampaignWith the August 5th release of the new Donor Awareness stamp at the 1998 U.S. Transplant Games in Columbus, Ohio, TRIO (Transplant Recipients International Organization) has launched a unique nationwide campaign to encourage all transplant recipients to stop and say "Thank you!" The stamp provides a special opportunity to write a letter of thanks for their gift of life. Such letters are often sent in care of the local organ procurement organization (OPO) that coordinated the transplant in hopes the note will be passed on to the most often anonymous donor family. This campaign goes beyond that unknown in encouraging letters to also be sent under cover of the new stamp to others also responsible for the transplant - such as transplant doctors/surgeons, transplant coordinators, nursing staffs, and others, like the entire OPO staff itself. In the "normal" over activity of post transplant life, this campaign encourages the hundreds of thousands of recipients and their families to take the time to express that deep feeling of gratitude and use the beautiful new stamp to raise awareness of the worldwide success of transplantation today. Recipients can send mail to their unknown donor family in care of their transplant center or the local OPO. A nationwide list of OPO address and phone information is available on TransWeb, in the Reference...Maps...OPO section. We can only imagine the impact such a "grass roots" thank you could have on the staffs of transplant centers around the country when such notes pour in under cover of the new stamp. Transplant Recipients International Organization, Inc., founded in 1983, is an independent, not-for-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life of transplant candidates, recipients, their families and the families of organ and tissue donors. TRIO works to increase awareness about the need to donate organs and tissue, support and educate transplant candidates, recipients, donors and their families, as well as to advocate on their behalf. Additional information can be found on the TRIO web site, including other activities you can do relating to the release of the donation stamp. |
