TRIO Chapter Activity Report

Manhattan Chapter - January 2010

“20 YEARS OF SUPPORT TO THE TRANSPLANT COMMUNITY”

                                                     1990-2010

MEETINGS:

1.Our meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month except

for the months of JULY, AUGUST and DECEMBER. Our meetings

begin at 6:00 with a half hour of socializing and then our speaker.

begins their presentation.

2. Our meetings generate an audience of 30-40 each month and

sometimes more depending on the Guest Speaker and their topic.

Most of our speakers come from our local transplant centers and

member recommendations on topics they think would be of interest.

3. We serve refreshments and food which also attracts members to attend

and try to have our meetings last about 1 ½ hrs as some members come

straight from work to the meetings and it can be a long day.

EVENTS

1. We hosted our 16th TRIO Manhattan TRIANGLE AWARDS DINNER

on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2009.  It was a great success with 250 guests

in attendance.  We were happy to have 8 of the Directors of Transplantation from 8 of the local transplant centers here in the metropolitan  area of New York join us.

Our Guest of Honor was Dr. Lloyd Ratner, Dir. of Renal Transplantation at Columbia/NY Presby University Medical Center. We also honored a Donor Family and a Recipient of the Year from our Chapter.  We are booked to host our 17th Dinner on October 22, 2010.

2. We are currently planning our 15th Ecumenical Service, “Remember & Rejoice”, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Saturday, April 10th, 2010 from

2:00-3:30 in the afternoon.  Last year over 1200 guests attended the service which includes, donor families, pre and post patients, medical professionals, caregivers and all other who have been touched by

transplantation.  We have selected speakers who address the guests

musical selections, a candlelight ceremony and a Rose Presentation

to all donor families in honor of their loved ones .  We also include

living donors and recipients. We present a Program Booklet to all.

3. We will also be hosting our annual “CELEBRATION OF LIFE”

Dinner for our Chapter on Sunday, April 18th at a wonderful Greek

Restaurant in the heart of New York City.

DONOR AWARENESS

1. TRIO Manhattan Members volunteer on a daily basis with our

local OPO, The New York Organ Donor Network and attend health fairs,

speaking engagements, schools, churches and other venues where they

are able to promote and educate the public on organ donation.  Some of

our members also go out on their own to do the same.

2. We will be participating in Donor Awareness events hosted by our local

transplant centers during APRIL, National Donate Life Month.  We have been fortunate to have been a part of these events since our chapter began in 1990.

LEGISLATION

1. We make sure to send our members all e-mails and notices that

we receive from TRIO Headquarters regarding anything that is important

to the transplant community and ask them to participate in supporting any

legislation on the agenda and to also let them know what and how

TRIO is involved and how we are represented on the hill.

2. We will also be supporting “LEGISLATION DAY” sponsored by our

local OPO, by going to ALBANY to meet with our local reps to discuss

all agendas related to the transplant community.  This will be held on

Tuesday, April 27th.  Buses will leave from different areas of New York.

MEMBERSHIP

1. We have sent our 2010 Membership Dues Notices out to our

members and other persons interested in becoming members.

As soon as we receive our dues, we will forward them onto to

TRIO Headquarters.

2. We continue to distribute our brochures to all of the transplant

centers so they may advise their patients about TRIO and the benefits

of becoming a member.

3. We were asked by a local pharmacy to also give them our brochures

to distribute to their transplant customers.  This is a great way to

promote membership.

FUNDRAISING

1. Our only fundraiser for the year is our Triangle Awards

dinner.  We will be submitting our 10% due as soon as our

taxes are completed.

This completes our report.
