TRIO Scholarship Program

Each year, TRIO's Scholarship Program gives thousands of dollars in academic grants to members and their families. In the past 16 years TRIO has awarded approximately 108 scholarships to deserving students who are transplant candidates, recipients, donors or their family members. These scholarships are generously funded by several TRIO chapters, individuals and interested organizations. Each recipient receives $1,000 toward their education at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

• The Jessica Beth Schwartz Scholarship
    Awards $2,500 scholarships yearly to transplant recipients under the age of 25 who are a senior in high school or enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college, university, or trade/technical school, offered to students residing in the Gift of Life Donor Program (OPO) service area (Eastern half of Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey or Delaware)
  
  
• The David Nelson Jr Memorial Fund Scholarship
  This $1,000 scholarship is offered to a donor family's children living in the Gift of Life Donor Program region (Southern NJ, Delaware, and southeastern Pennsylvania) and is available for private/parochial high school in addition to college, university, trade school.

• Isabelle Christenson Memorial Scholarship
  awards a scholarship to an individual or family member of someone directly impacted by organ donation including transplant candidates, recipients and donor family members.
  
  
• Jake Burke Memorial Scholarship
  In memory of  his son, Jake, an organ donor, this $1,000 scholarship is offered for Loch Raven High School seniors in Towson, Maryland.  Students of this school only should see their guidance counselor for an application.
  
  
• The Marcena Lozano Memorial Scholarship Fund [http://marcenasmiracles.com/]
  In memory of their daughter Marcena, the Lozanos offer several $1,000-$3,000 undergraduate scholarships with preference to candidates in western New York state but awarded to students all across the country (i.e., $37,000 in the past three years, each year always subject to available funds).
  
  
• Legacy of Life Scholarship [http://www.beadonor.org/scholarship] (Endowed by the Leslie Ebert Memorial Fund)
  The WRTC (Washington Regional Transplant Center) awards $14,000 in scholarship to high school seniors in their jurisdiction of Virginia (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford, and Fauquier counties and cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, Manassas, and Manassas Park); Maryland (Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Charles counties)
  
  
• Kidney & Urology Foundation of America (KUFA), scholarship   [http://www.kidneyurology.org/Patient_Resources/scholarships.php]  only kidney and urology patients are eligible to apply for these scholarships, this includes kidney transplant recipients
  
  
• UAA Alaska Kidney Foundation Scholarship  [http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/scholarships/kidney.cfm] The purpose of the Alaska Kidney Foundation Scholarship is to provide scholarships in the name of the Alaska Kidney Foundation to prepare new nurses to provide safe and effective care to individuals experiencing chronic kidney disease in Alaska. Award amount is a minimum $1,000 per academic year.
  
  
• The Betty Montoya Gift of Life scholarship [http://otapnm.com/scholarship.aspx]
  honors former APS teacher and kidney transplant recipient Betty Montoya with two $1,000.00 scholarships and two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors from a New Mexico high school
  
  
• Georgia Transplant Foundation [http://www.gatransplant.org/-support-programs/academic-scholarships] awards seven scholarships to residents of Georgia attending college with a variety of requirements for eligibility based on each scholarship.

• Michael Corea Scholarship [http://www.triocleveland.org/Scholarship_Program.html] - for Ohio residents offered by TRIO Greater Cleveland Chapter will be awarded to a deserving transplant candidate, recipient, or living donor
  
  
• Donate Life South Carolina [http://www.donatelifesc.org/pages/about/scholarships] - two scholarships for South Carolina residents (the Lawrence F. McManus Scholarship and the DLSC Scholarship)
  
  
• IOPO Foundation Scholarships [http://www.iopo.org/transplant-recipients#scholarship] - IOPO staff contribute money each year to fund educational scholarships for the immediate family members of Indiana organ/tissue donors, as well as living donors who gave organs to relatives, transplant recipients, people waiting for organs, and their immediate family members.
  
  
• Transplant Support Organization in New York State offers a scholarship to a student in a TSO supported school who develops or participates in an educational or public service initiative relating to organ, eye and tissue donation : http://www.transplantsupport.org/scholarship.html
  
  
• Jerry Cahill You Cannot Fail Scholarship  Applicants must have cystic fibrosis and must already have completed at least one semester of undergraduate coursework. Applicants must demonstrate that they go “above and beyond” in everything they do, displaying outstanding character, leadership and service to the community. They also must be compliant to their CF therapies and engage in regular exercise as part of their effort to stay healthy. Finally, applicants must demonstrate a need for financial assistance.

And transplant/donor related scholarships of a different nature:

• The Transplantation Society (TTS) and The International Society of Organ Donation and Procurement (ISODP) announced they are launching a program to provide scholarships to transplant coordinators involved in either living or deceased organ donation to participate in global training programs currently in existence. The program is being sponsored by Astellas Pharmaceuticals.  http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0YUG/is_11_19/ai_n42125562/ - Note: these $25,000 scholarships closed as of Nov 2009, but the link may be useful if a new program is launched in 2010 so we will leave it posted for reference.
  

• ASTS - Roche Laboratories Scientist Scholarships - ($40,000/year for two years) ASTS and Roche Laboratories continue their commitment toward supporting full-time basic and translational research in the field of transplantation and transplant immunobiology in the laboratory of an ASTS Member.  This award is specifically designed to support research in a laboratory setting.

• Arrow-Hawkesbury Canoe Classic (HCC) PhD Scholarships - (Australian) a biomedical research scholarship in the area of leukaemia and bone marrow or stem cell transplantation.
  
  
• The Pamela Cresson Tucker Scholarship Award - award is to promote the scholarship of women students, residents, or fellows engaged in research on the infectious complications of the immunocompromised host, particularly transplant medicine and oncology
