Manhattan Chapter - August 2014
It has been an exciting year for TRIO Manhattan. Although we are sad to see her go, Fran Dillon decided to step down as president and give other members an opportunity to serve on our board. Fran has been an inspiration to our entire organization and we are grateful to have had her as our leader through challenging times. Fran continues to be an active member and a great source of information and guidance. Tinamarie Sammon took on the role of President in September 2013 as well as new Officers and Board Members. Lucy Garnett-Vice President, Betsy Morrissey-Secretary, and Ted Lawson-Treasurer. Board members Kallyn Krash-(past treasurer) Ellen Alexis, Linda Strappazon and Joan Galkin comprise our amazing board of energy and ideas.
We had another successful “Remember and Rejoice” service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan in April where we honored our donors and their families for the selfless gifts they made possible and to show them how healthy and grateful we all are. We redesigned our chapter’s brochure with the generous help of graphic designers Ann Rathkopf and Susan Bloch who donated their time and vision to create an amazing look for our brochure and began distributing it to all of the transplant hospitals in NYC to promote the organization and acquire new members. And through a generous invitation from the New York Organ Donor Network, we have moved our monthly chapter meetings to their amazing office space at 460 West 34th Street, NY NY 10001 (15th Flr), with fully equipped conference room and have been perfecting our webinar skills so that our members who cannot make it to meetings can still be with us and benefit from our talented speakers and interact with members and guests.
We have begun the planning of our Triangle Awards dinner-dance which will be held October 22, 2015 and we will be sending out updates on recipients to be honored and details of the event as we get closer to the event date.
In January we joined the many chapters of TRIO and other transplant organizations and senior advocacy groups in a fierce letter writing campaign to express our opposition to the proposed changes in prescription benefits under Medicare Part D. This issue called our members to action and we saw a pouring out of support and an interest in our members to advocate for themselves and for the many Americans whose health was being threatened. We are working on the development of programs for our members that are important to them and current in the transplant world. So our board is very hard at work keeping our members informed of the issues and challenges in legislation, organ shortage and ideas to improve the sobering numbers of people still waiting for a lifesaving transplant. We are all looking forward to another exciting year!
