Coincidence, or the work of angels?
Jim,
Your point is well taken on how we never know the impact our words may have. I received a call Thursday from the transplant center at Duke University Medical Center. The call came from one of my Mother's transplant nurses, who had attended the conference in St. Louis, in which Jan O was inquiring. The nurse informed me of the inspiring talk Reg Green gave regarding his son's gifts of donation. I had met Mr. Green a few years ago and agreed with her he is an excellent speaker.
My Mother's nurse has been very close to our family for 15 years. Mother has even requested she give her eulogy when the time comes. The nurse shared with me how she had looked forward to the meeting in which she felt she needed the encouragement to continue the work she is doing. She told me she was excited to get the book from Mr. Green. She went on to tell me about the letters that were placed in the front of each book. I told her I knew about the letters, as I had written one. I went on to say I had missed the deadline, sending my letter to you and Pam a day late, hoping it would still get used. She was pleased to know I had a personal relationship with you and Pam.
Our conversation became very emotional when the nurse informed me of her happiness over opening her book and finding that of the 600 letters that had been written, ironically, the letter in her book had been written by me, her patient's daughter. She said she felt this was just what she needed to reaffirm to her that she is doing the work she should be doing. I could not wait to tell my family, who was equally emotional over hearing this story. Coincidence, maybe, but everyone chose to think this was one of those meant to be moments!
Thank you and Pam for giving me this opportunity to express my appreciation for the wonderful nurses who help recipients with their gifts of life. I rejoice knowing the gifts my husband and other donor families gave have been treated with the greatest care and respect.
Warmly,
Jan
